Greg Mike brings “Popstars & Cokeheads” to Miami

Never trust a man with two first names. Unless of course he happens to be one of the realest friends you could ever have, and it helps if his moniker is running the gamut of your favorite blogs…

Atlanta based GREG MIKE is the nexus of several worlds. He is a formally trained studio artist who commands a rich understanding of street art, graphic design, fashion design, and commercial branding, packaging and marketing. In the past year, has been bombarding the art scene with his signature low-brow / street series “Popstars and Cokeheads.” First appearing in San Francisco’s esteemed Medicine Gallery last fall, then hitting home for his second show.  Saturday June 12, Overthrow is proud to host the third stop at Butter Gallery in Downtown Miami’s Art District.  Subsequently, we’ll be hosting the afterparty down the street at Bardot.

In homage to this fine venture, Greg Mike and Overthrow are releasing a collaborative T-shirt at the afterparty.  We’re giving away 10 shirts and selling a limited quantity at a local boutique undisclosed until the day of the show.

Here’s a sneak peek of the goods:

Imogen Heap (LIVE) in Miami at The Fillmore - WED 6/2/10

Imogen Heap is one of those rare cases of something really heady and intrinsically personal getting huge in the mainstream in the strangest ways. First, the strange, sparse song “Hide and Seek” blew up after being featured on teen ridicudrama The O.C. in a funeral scene after a main character died. Touching.

Now it the song is having a huge comeback, years after it’s original release, based on the strength of a cascade of remixes in genres from hip-hop to dubstep. The songs minimal nature and emotional tone makes it inspiring for a lot of other artists and leaves all kinds of room for reinterpretation.

But aside for her big tracks, the british musician who writes, produces, mixes, and now releases her own music, makes a variety of music that lies somewhere in the realm of Feist and Bjork. Her work is really beautiful, despite its lack of brutality and intensity. Thats actually not true, its kind of brutally melodic and intensely emotional. Fucking emo!

Anway, you can stream her new alubum Ellipse free here.

Imogen Heap will be performing LIVE at the Fillmore Miami Beach Wed June 2nd.

Tickets are available here.

Memorial day in Miami Beach is a little different then the typical American vision of BBQs and beers.

I’m not mad at Gucci Mane (glad you’re free homie!) but some people just can’t compete with your jewelry and diamond grills and rap sheet.

But you dont have to feel bad about your rap career being stuck on hold, because we are providing the solution to this weekend’s scene with a bling-casual affair where your rims can be 20″ or less and you’ll still have a chance of getting in.

The electro duo CLASSIXX will be bringing you an exclusive mix of their remixes, blends, and original tracks. An evening of their groovy tracks is the perfect compliment to your day drinking.

Taking place at Cafeina, Wynwoods half gallery, half lounge: http://www.cafeinamiami.com/

Click here to download a very sexy/groovy mix of classics and Classixx.

Here is the tubetastic video for their huge remix of Phoenix (a certain member of Overthrow’s secret private jam):

After School Special 5/15/10 - Pictures

after-school-special

So a few months back, a young man hunted us down at an event and after nervously introducing himself, claimed he wanted to be an intern. Never ones not to take advantage of an opportunity to corrupt educate the youth, we obliged. We even offered this young man an opportunity in return: if he worked his face off, did everything we said no matter how ridiculous, and took our abuses, then when the time came for him to graduate we would help him throw an Overthrow style party.
From that point we moved in our with our lives and business but this youngster just kept working and getting it done, all the while plotting like a good acolyte would, for the perfect time to remind us of our oath. Also never ones to break oaths, we helped organize the jam of these kids lifetime, right in our very own Castle headquarters.
It was slammed with the raddest youngsters in Miami, partying as hard as I’ve ever seen and we weren’t even selling booze. There were mosh pits, kids on shoulders, and electro sing alongs. Plus, the girls were so good looking that we had to constantly remind each other that they were highschoolers (ie jailbait) and that none of us wanted a record (or more on it).

Now, that young man is Emerson aka Shut Up Emerson, and he has something to say:

huge thanks to the 500 people who came out last night and raged with us! you guys were fucking awesome! so awesome, in fact, we just may have to come back with a sequel… ;)

A few things:

1.) No, nobody died.

2.) The DJ’s that rocked your faces off were Overthrow’s very own Damaged Goods and Troy Kurtz. add them.

3.) if you took pictures at the photo wall, they will be viewable by clicking on the image above.

4.) yes, if you missed out, it was the best post prom/graduation party ever.

From us, we expect big things from you. And don’t think for a second we aren’t going to have eyes on you in NYC.

Nero’s Innocence Video

Nero are some of the leaders in the fusion of drum and bass and dubstep thats emerging so potently right now, and after doing their American debut in NYC and their venue destroying WMC set at White Room in Miami, we are big supporters of the most charming gentleman in the electronic music world. Despite that very English tendencies to turn into skin shedding snake lobsters and spin in 95 degree rooms wearing leather jackets, they are world class producers, performers, and bros.
Check their anime/vampire/futuristic sci-fi drama for mega track “Innocence” above. Its probably edited down version of some famous anime flick we are either too cool or too lame to know about.

New Zelda High Score Set by Mark Ronson

New videogame, I mean video, for the lead single “Circuit Breaker” from Mark Ronson’s upcoming compilation album. Dude smashes everything in a cool way that never seems contrived or trying too hard. He just kinda does whatever he’s feeling, which clearly is awesome when whatever your doing is drenched in quirky charm, artistocratic privilege, NYC grooves and rock royalty. Its the self styled soundtrack to one of the hippest lives around.

LAST RIGHTS PRESENTS : THE NEW MIAMI DESIGN VOTE

Overthrow has been working with Miami designers Last Rights on a collaborative clothing line set to come out for fall/winter 2010. Needless to say, the collection is epic, mysterious, and almost entirely black.

Until that comes out, you can create your own collaboration with Last Rights by voting on their new project THE NEW MIAMI. Check their writeup on it below:

Since Last Rights came on the scene, we have always stayed true to our roots and represented the great city of Miami to the fullest. We are extremely proud and excited to see THE NEW MIAMI movement that is taking place right now. Having a group of young, talented, and very hungry individuals at the forefront, there is no way that the arts of Miami will ever be overlooked…

That being said, it is only right that we get the people involved in deciding which of these shirts should be produced. After all Last Rights is here for the YOU. With out your support we are nothing. We will be producing whichever design wins on both black and white T’s…

Take the time to vote and make a difference! And remember, this is just the beginning!

Truly yours,
The Last Rights Family

Banksy Makes a Movie, Humanity Looks Dumber by Comparison

Banksy went from being one of Scottland Yard’s most wanted to an international art sensation. Its incredible how fickle the legal system is and how a little intellectualization can reshape the perspective of crime. Where they used to paint over his work as quickly as possible, now the government stations guards to protect them and prevent people from literally TEARING APART WALLS to have a piece of his work.

True identity still unknown, the stencil godfather, satirical genius and leader of modern street art, Banksy has staged some of the most incredible stunts in art history including city wide graffiti campaigns, sneaking his own work and hanging it in the Tate Modern, but his past series and work are for you to waste copious amounts of time googling when you should be working. Check here for starts.

Now he is crossing over into films in a way only he could. He is releasing a movie called Exit Through The Gift Shop that is essentially an elaborate set up where he masterminds the whole thing and leaves people guessing, interpreting and conspiracy theoririzing. It is part mockumentary destroying the credibility of a wannabe street artist, part send of the entire fine art world, and part actual documentary of the biggest street artists in the world. It is sure to be another incredible piece of work from one of the great artists of our time.
